Anna O’Keeffe Yarbrough (Charleston, SC) returns to the modern-classical world with new single Quickening. Formerly releasing as Anna Yarbrough, her return heralds a new creative identity and most fully realized work to date.

Quickening—a hazy, hypnotic, textured solo piano work—is appropriately named to herald Yarbrough’s return. “Quickening”—to revive, instill vigor, come alive—is a somewhat autobiographical track; the piece is an appropriate reintroduction following a matrescence of both literal and creative becoming.

In 2022, Yarbrough purchased a historic 1827 property in downtown Charleston and has been thoughtfully restoring a studio space within its walls. What began as architectural restoration quickly became an act of personal creative renewal, blending her newfound love of historic preservation with her mission to curate a vibrant artistic hub for her work. 2026—and Quickening—marks the debut of a new artistic chapter and the culmination of a transformative creative sabbatical spent raising her young children while working on various other musical endeavors.

Meditative and murmuring, Quickening holds in perfect tension a subtle thread of drama from open to close. The undercurrent of anticipation nicely mirrors the arrival of this project, a considered blend of classical tradition and modern approach. After a pivotal few years, Quickening is less comeback than arrival.
